When Florence taught
the world to photograph

Home · Art Notes · Fratelli Alinari

Long before photography became an everyday gesture, there was a Florentine workshop that turned the glass plate into an instrument of knowledge. It was 1852, and its founders were called Alinari.

Three brothers, a revolution

Leopoldo Alinari, an engraver by training, opened his photographic studio in Florence together with his brothers Giuseppe and Romualdo. In a few years that small family business became the most authoritative photographic house in Italy — and the oldest photographic company in the world still remembered today.

The Alinari were the first to grasp something simple and powerful: photography could serve art. With their documentary campaigns they began to systematically reproduce paintings, sculptures and monuments, offering scholars, museums and travellers around the world faithful images of works otherwise out of reach.

Photographing beauty to multiply it, and hand it down to the future.

Florence, the world's laboratory

It is no accident that all this was born here. In the second half of the 19th century Florence was an international cultural capital, a destination of the Grand Tour, a crossroads of artists and intellectuals. The Alinari turned that ferment into an archive: millions of images that still tell us what cities, works and faces looked like in an era.

Their legacy lives on in a word we use every day without thinking — “to document” — and in a modern idea of heritage: what is beautiful should be shared, reproduced, made accessible.

A gaze that resembles ours

There is something deeply akin between that devotion to detail and hospitality as we understand it. Taking care of an image or of a guest means, at heart, the same thing: freezing a moment and making it memorable.

That is why we dedicated one of our themed rooms to the Alinari Brothers: a small tribute to those who, with a glass plate, taught Florence — and the world — to look better.
